What Is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency involves any sudden issue with your teeth or gums that causes severe pain, bleeding, or other concerning symptoms. Acting quickly in these situations can prevent further complications, reduce discomfort, and help save damaged teeth. Common dental emergencies include:
- Toothache: Severe or persistent tooth pain may be due to infection, decay, or an abscess. Ignoring a toothache can worsen the problem, so seeking prompt treatment is essential.
- Broken or Chipped Tooth: Accidents or trauma can lead to a fractured tooth, which may expose sensitive inner layers and lead to pain or further damage.
- Knocked-Out Tooth: A knocked-out tooth requires immediate attention. Quick action can often mean the difference between saving and losing the tooth.
- Loose or Dislodged Tooth: Injury or trauma can loosen a tooth, which can cause pain and may lead to further issues if not addressed promptly.
- Lost Filling or Crown: When a filling or crown falls out, the exposed tooth can become highly sensitive and vulnerable to decay or infection.
- Abscess or Infection: Swelling, pain, or a pus-filled bump on the gums can indicate a dental abscess or infection, which requires urgent care to prevent it from spreading.
- Soft Tissue Injury: Cuts, lacerations, or trauma to the gums, tongue, or cheeks can cause significant bleeding and discomfort and may require immediate attention.
If you experience any of these symptoms, contact us right away. We’ll do everything we can to accommodate you as quickly as possible and provide the necessary care.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Knowing how to respond to a dental emergency can make a significant difference in the outcome. Here are some basic first-aid steps you can take:
- Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water, and use floss to gently remove any debris that may be causing discomfort. Avoid placing aspirin or other painkillers directly on the affected area, as this can irritate the gums.
- Knocked-Out Tooth: If you’ve knocked out a tooth, try to pick it up by the crown (the chewing surface) rather than the root. Gently rinse it with water if dirty, but do not scrub or remove any tissue attached to it. If possible, try to place the tooth back in its socket. If not, keep it tucked in your cheek or in a container of milk or saline until you can see Dr. Perry.
- Broken or Chipped Tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water, and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any pieces of the tooth if possible, as we may be able to reattach it.
- Lost Filling or Crown: Try to keep the area clean, and avoid chewing on the affected side. Over-the-counter dental cement can be used temporarily to cover the tooth if you have lost a crown.
- Abscess or Infection: Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to help reduce pain and draw out infection, but do not attempt to pop or drain the abscess on your own.
After taking these steps, contact us as soon as possible for further instructions and to arrange an emergency appointment. Prompt treatment can alleviate your discomfort and minimize potential complications.
